Radon Mitigation in Calgary
Why Certified Radon Mitigation works?
High levels of radon can be a daunting discovery for every concerned citizen. Even though its nerving, unfortunately, it’s a common place in Calgary and the surrounding area.
The obvious solution a person seeks is by venting the basement air, or sealing the basement cracks, or sealing the entire home; none of them works. However, a professionally licensed professional uses a custom-designed sub-slab depressurization system, tuned to reduce the radon levels up to 95%, because this technique intercepts the soil gas (the #1 contributor of radon) right at the source.

FAQ on Radon Mitigation
Which type of Radon Testing is the most recommended?
As a licensed radon professional, we will always recommend long-term testing. In comparison to short-term testing, the user gets more reliable data for mitigation decisions.
What is a Radon test kit?
Radon test kit, also known as an Alpha tracking device, is a do-it-yourself device used to measure radon in the most cost-effective way. The house owner place this device in the lowest dwelling space away from direct draft and other objects for a minimum of 91 days. On concluding of the testing the device is packaged and mailed in the preaddressed envelope (the envelope, the test fees are part of the package) for lab analysis.
Is it essential to conduct Radon testing in every calgary homes?
Radon testing in Calgary homes is non-negotiable.
The City of Calgary and surrounding Foothills communities, including Okotoks, High River, Cochrane, and Airdrie, sit atop sedimentary formations and glacial till rich in trace uranium. This geology results in indoor radon levels significantly higher than the national average. In high-risk areas like Cochrane, nearly 1 in 3 houses test above the 200 Bq/m³ safety limit. Furthermore, while groundwater itself is rarely the primary source of exposure, drilled water wells in rural areas can act as conduits, drawing higher levels of radon gas into the home.
Is there any Radon testing required while selling a home?
In light of the radon hazard, the National Building Code (NBC) now requires builders to include radon rough-in in all new construction. While the National Building Code requires rough-ins, only active systems are truly effective at overcoming the “stack effect”
But it’s completely the buyer’s responsibility to test and take action. Alberta’s real estate code doesn’t mandate the testing of Radon before selling a home. However, due to increasing awareness of radon, more home buyers now also require radon tests as part of the home inspection.
Additionally, a recent radon test or having an active mitigation system can be a selling point for your property.
How long does radon test take?
- A typical Radon gas short-term test takes 96 hours. Where were the homeowners to “Closed House Conditions” by keeping all exterior doors and windows shut for 12 hours before and during a radon gas test.
- And a long-term test runs for a minimum of 91 days (ideally done in between Oct and Apr) to 12 Months. The average measurement is used as the north star for mitigation.
Which radon gas detectors are the most reliable?
The selection of type will vary depending on price point, time constraints, and convenience. To categorize, based on:
- Convenience, live monitor, accuracy & quick results. As these devices start giving results almost immediately or within a day, with higher accuracy, without the need of shiping the device for lab analysis. Best for both Short-term and Long-term tests:
- a: RD200 RadonEye
- b: Airthings view plus
- c: Airthings Wave Plus
- d: Airthings radon
- Price point & accuracy. As these are highly affordable, also give highly accurate results because they are used for long-term tests, and upon conclusion, the equipment has to be mailed to the lab for results
- a: Radonova Radon Test Kit
How much does a typical radon test cost?
We offer short-term tests FREE of cost, which will give you a “snapshot” of radon levels at that specific moment. A professional Long-term test ranges from $150 to $300.
